I think it might be very interesting to include some kind of support for scripting in order to get data into (or out of) VUE, other than the rigid methods that come integrated in VUE.
This can serve as a base for people to be able to develop their own algorithms in simple scripts, without having to know how to program in Java.

Candidates might be for instance Lua, which has an implementation that integrates fine with Java: LuaJ.
Aside of that Lua has an excellent library for parsing data : LPeg.
Those put together could seriously boost VUE's applicability in my opinion.

To make a fork of your idea to add a scripting language:
I'ld imagine that groovy would be a suitable partner to the java language.
I guess an VUE-to-Groovy API could easily extended and very simply (re)used.
