I am new to this software and the forum, so this idea may either exist already or be covered elsewhere.

However, there was once a mind mapping tool called Idons and it had an extremely powerful way of using layers. Essentially nodes could be "doorways" to the next layer - a sort of vertical link to the layer underneath (or above).

It feels rather odd to see the connecting links but for the node on another layer to be invisible (if you turn off layer visibility.

Also this way, layers do not have to be contiguous - Node 1 could be connected vertically to Layer 2 but Node to to layer 3 .. and so on.

Just an observation re a feature I relly liked before.
