Rendering on Macbook Pro Retina Display  XML

The text in the nodes and the links are not rendered very clear on a Macbook Pro Retina display.
Is there a way to improve this?
VUE is a great tool and a big screen is important. So if VUE can display in full Retina resolution would be great.
Any ideas?
Thanks Markus

Hi Markus,

I had the same problem. This is related to Java retina support which is provided in JRE 7 update 40.
See details here.

Now, until the next release/update of VUE, you may start it using the jar with the following command:

Use the appropriate value of mrj.version based on your version of Mac OS X, although something between 10.6 and 10.9 should work.

In my case, I am using the standard and latest (available at the time of this writing) version of Java from Oracle, 64bit release:

I hope it helps.

I'll provide an answer that worked for me (running VUE v. 3.3.0). Not clear on how/if this overlaps with Marius's response.

I followed the directions on this page, about providing Retina support for Java apps: http://stefan.budeanu.com/blog/?p=88

It appears one must have the legacy/deprecated version of Java still supplied by Apple (Java 6), and make a simple edit to the VUE plist file. It sounds scary and complicated, but really isn't!

Note that the artwork in VUE (e.g., icon designs) will NOT render in Retina/HiDPI mode and will still look fuzzy. VUE developers will have to fix that one.

Hi, I'm having the same problem and editing the VUE plist file doesn't seem to have sorted it out.

The last 5 lines of the plist file are now:
</dict>
</dict>
<key>NSHighResolutionCapable</key><true/>
</dict>
</plist>

Is that right? I think I'm using the legacy version of Java but not sure, when I query "java -version" in terminal I get the following response:

java -version
java version "1.6.0_65"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_65-b14-462-11M4609)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.65-b04-462, mixed mode)

The rendering isn't terrible - but enough to make me choose CMaps over Vue if I can't get it resolved, see attached screenshot (if anything it looks better in the screen shot than on the screen).

Thanks for any help on this.

Zareen,

Hmmm, it would appear you are running the legacy version, but I'm not sure.

You can try downloading it from Apple and installing, just to be sure.

https://support.apple.com/kb/dl1572?locale=en_US

You might also need to restart VUE (and/or your machine).

Not at my machine right now that has the edited plist file, so can't confirm that those lines are right, but if you followed the instructions, they should be.

I use http://retinizer.mikelpr.com

Works really well for graphics and text. Icons are still pixelated, though.

Alas, after further searching, VUE is only partially functional on El Capitan for me.

When I launch it with double-click, it is using the most recent JAVA from System, using the Mac Menu (on top of the screen) and has the native OSX Look.
But the dialogs are not fully functional: I cannot change linetypes, shapes, connector types! I can change the color however.

When I explicitly launch it as a JAVA 1.6 software, it looks back to the old and generic VUE, with menu attached to the Window and plain white buttons (Java Look).
But then the dialogs are usable again.

However, I did have problems saving and loading files, which is a real show-stopper.

So I retract my comment: VUE is almost not usable anymore in this state...
