I am new with this program and I was wondering if each node shape or symbol has a specific purpose. For example in a Flow Chart each shape or symbol identifies the step to take, such as a box which represents a process, a diamond represents a decision, etc.

Hi Luis,

We designed VUE to be as flexible a tool as possible. VUE does not prescribe a format (radial or hierarchical mapping), and does not predefine workflow or semantic meaning.

If you want to do flow charts, an idea would be to create a legend on the side of your map (or in a separate document) and share it with colleagues, so you all share the same "vocabulary" for the meaning of the nodes.

Another idea is to use the Ontology feature in VUE. You can create your own ontology using a tool like Protégé, and import it within VUE. This ontology can specify node properties (shape, color) with semantic meaning ("red" "flag-shape" nodes mean...)

We hope to create a section on the VUE website to share ontologies. If you come up with one and want to share it, please email it to us and we will post it.

I hope this helps!

Melanie
