I notice there is only a versionof VUE for Windows. When will a Mac version be available?
Anonymous

We do plan to have a Mac version available however we have no release date set. As soon as we put one together I will send out an email to our registered users to inform them.

Any update on the work on the Mac release? We'd like to work with VUE, but we can't begin to use it until it works across platforms.

Darren: soon. We're working very hard it. The mac code itself
is actually now complete (I run it every day), tho we need to
do some QA, and most of that is actually for new features
that affect both platforms.

What about Linux?

David: VUE runs on linux, though the features that interact with the platform need a bit more testing. We may be able to make a pre-release available.

Can I beta test VUE for Mac?

Looks Cool! Would you like another beta tester for VUE for Mac? If I had access to it over the summer I would be able to get it set up for my class. Thanks for all of your work.

Scott says (12/11/04) that he runs the code every day. David says (4/27) "Looks Cool" which makes me think he has a copy.

I am going to Social Software and the Academy Workshop May 13-16 (http://www.annenberg.edu/symposia/ssaw/program.html) to present

A Juxtaposition of Technologies: VUE, PurpleSlurple, Wikalong, & Del.icio.us

I get a demo slot, and will be using my Mac. It would be much nicer to have a good beta of VUE than screen shots for this portion of my talk.

The Mac version of VUE is now available at sourceforge:

Have fun! Please give us any feedback.

thanks,

The MAC Version currently also works on Linux - is there any reason why the Mac libraries can't be ditched and a general Unix UI developed? It seems that having to write all different versions defeats the point of using a language like Java.

Scott -- I'm not sure what you mean when you say the Mac version works on Linux.

There is a single, common, VUE.jar that is built (with ant), which is used in the PC release
and the Mac release, and which can also be run on Linux with "java -jar VUE.jar"
if you extract it from the VUE.app Mac release application directory -- is that
what you meant? The VUE.app on Mac (which you can also build with ant) just runs VUE.jar with some args that trigger the Mac look and feel. (We currently build VUE.exe from VUE.jar for Windows outside of ant using a 3rd party app, so you won't find that on sourceforge). If you run VUE.jar on Mac outside of VUE.app, you'll see the default java L&F on Mac. (It's even possible to run in the default Mac look and feel as opposed to brushed metal) . There are some VUE specific tweaks to the Mac L&F and default java L&F, but it's not much code -- we didn't write an entire L&F for Mac: Apple was nice enough to do that for us :)

What do yo mean by developing a general Unix UI? It should currently look like the PC on on Linux, running the default java Metal L&F.

BTW, congrats on getting VUE to build :) I know we left everyone hanging in
that department.
