mike.. thats interesting, because it didn't work for me. when i click "start VUE" under the preferences/cog button in zotero, it brings up a new tab, gray in background, but doesn't load VUE. perhaps the JDK isn't installed? i'm using Windows7 with firefox 3.6, zotero 2.0, etc. Any idea what's going on?

Go to this site and it'll tell you if you JDK is working properly in the browser:

mike
that was it, thanks! for future reference (especially as i'm telling less computer-savvy colleagues to install zotero+vue) i really feel it would be great if you emphasize these things in the sticky: eg 1. make sure you have java installed 2. there is no need for the application. i know these things are obvious to the developer but a little sentence helps to clear things up for the general audience. thanks again!

Thanks, that's useful to know, I'll add it to the sticky, we certainly don't set out to make things unclear :)

thanks mike! i have one more question that perhaps can be solved by pointing me to the right section in the user guide; i'm going through it but not finding it. this is more of a substantive thing. where (and what are even the terms y'all are using for it) is the understanding/concept of clustering and relatings different fields in the same dataset?

lets say, in zotero i have 10 books tagged coffee, 5 of those tagged colombian, 4 of those tagged highland, i also have the other 6 tagged lowland, but those 6 are tagged ecuadorian. etc. what we would, essentially, call a "tag cloud" in web vernacular form. how do i create something like this in VUE? something that has the tag floating in the map with a bigger/smaller size, then the books that are related to it connected to it by links? how do I control how far/close this clustering is (say i have 100 books, if i drag "title" from the VUE zotero plugin, it gives me a HUGE screen distribution that imho could be calculated a bit more efficiently)...

i'm not meaning for you to help me do everything i need, but i'm really confused about the basics of doing these things from datasets like zotero -- not from drawing it out from the beginning like in many of the tutorials and screensets you have on the User Guide. thanks again very much for your attention on a saturday!

z,

Interesting question. First, we don't do anything with making an attribute/tag node bigger or smaller depending on how many connections it has although that would be an interesting option. Second, as far as how close or near the clusters are I think you may want to look at the "Format->Arrange Linked" menu, here you can select whatever the center of your cluster is and execute different layouts on it, as well as pull the linked nodes in closer or push them further away. Let me know if the actions in that menu sort of answer what you're looking for.

Thanks,

Mike

Mike, thanks for the response. I think the size adjustment would be a great option, seeing as how people are really used to that presentational format with the general popularity of tag clouds on the web... But I'm still really confused about the other question, the relating of the tag and title.. again, i'm trying to cluster titles around tags, and i'm not seeing how to do that... tags that have 10 titles attached are being placed really far in the distribution, while tags that just have one title have the title distributed right next to it. it just seems like i would like some kind of "cog" or "connected wheel" diagram.. popular tags in the middle and all the titles around them, and the titles being linked to other things. is there any method to how, if i drag both titlts and tags as content onto the map, VUE originally distributes them?

i suppose i should elaborate on what may be the problem, as well. say i have 20 entries in zotero, so 20 "titles". however, lets say they are of 3 "types", book, journal and website. when i drop both those datasets on the map, i get exactly the result i want - the 3 main types are foregrounded and all the 20 items circle these three.

however, when i have 105 titles (as i do in this test bib) with 159 tags, it gets crazy. i suppose that is a problem of physics :-) and that it is difficulty creating constellations when you have so many associations. however, i still do not see why a tag with 20 titles associated with it is placed at the corner of the map, where a tag with one title is placed in the center... thereby making a purely cursory, visual appraisal of the map will accord MORE value to the one tag, instead of the much major tag. does this make sense at all? do you have any suggestions?

Very nice tool. We will include this in the next release of UberStudent http://uberstudent.org and hopefully some of the bugs will be worked out by then.

I have some questions about how this plugin works. I'm a pretty new user of Vue but I'm really enjoying it. My use case is developing visual representations of collections of academic literature. Here's how I am trying to use the zotero plugin:

- I have a collection I am interested in mapping
- I create some tags and some relationships
- I create a new map in Vue and send the collection into the map as a dataset
- I add all the Zotero items to the map and play around with them.

So far so good. But my Zotero collection is a work in progress, and I will add more records and change the relationships and stuff. How do I get the new info back into Vue?

- I just send the whole collection back to Vue
- It notices that some things have changed and updates accordingly (good)
- It doesn't notice if I change a tag's label -- the old one stays on the map (an annoyance)
- It chooses random colours for the various dataset items, e.g. year, tag, author; these don't match what's already in the map (an annoyance)

It would be nice if there could be some persistence with colours. But this is a minor problem.
A bigger problem is what happens when I'm done for the day, quit Firefox, then come back later and want to keep working on my map. So, before quitting I save it as a .vue file, then try to go back in.

- I open the map in the Vue-firefox plugin and it seems to have forgotten how the map relates to the dataset (bad). (also load time is very long.)
- I try to send the collection back to Vue and it treats it as a whole new dataset. It thinks that none of my records are on the map, even though they all are. If I add them, it plops down the entire dataset without knowing that there are duplicates.
- Alternatively I try opening it in Vue (standalone); this time there is a blank line under datasets, and when I click it, under Browse I see 'XML feed unavailable, Cause:FileNotFoundException....". I right-click the blank line and into the address field I copy the xml address that Vue-Firefox created, which does bring up the dataset, but it's still not linked to the content in the map. In any case I feel I'm not following the intended use case here.

What I think should be happening:
- When I re-open a map in firefox-Vue or in standalone-Vue it should include the Zotero dataset and it should remember how the current contents of the map are related to the Zotero dataset. I suspect a bug but maybe I'm wrong in how it is supposed to work?

Thanks.

In actual Zotero 2.0.3 klicking "add notes to map" hast no effect. When will this be corrected?

Thanks

I'm trying to install this plugin. Zotero is insatalled (correct version) and Firefox also. I've downloaded the plugin (XPI file). What file should be openned to install this plugin (File -> Open File -> ...) ?

you just need to open the .xpi file in ff. Firefox will thus install it as an add-on

Same problem here.
Also, I wonder if it is now possible to import multiple notes per item, as discussed here : https://vue-forums.uit.tufts.edu/posts/list/584.page#2668.

I'm just starting to use VUE, but I've been using zotero for some time now. I have many notes per item, and also standalone notes, which sometimes contain significant amounts of text. The ideal workflow for me would be to see every note as a node on the map, linked to its biblioreference when the latter exists (when not a standalone note). Is this possible ?

Also, thanks to all those who worked on VUE. It seems a very helpful tool, and I'm eager to discover it further!
