Has anybody built VUE for GNU/Linux? I've downloaded the sources from sourceforge (since the pre-built jars did not work for me), but have been unable to build them. (I know nothing about Java and I was only able to build the *.class from Util.java.)

I guess I could try to emulate the answers in the "Build VUE from source", but how to actually reproduce some steps is not clear to me. (Yes, I do have a working java development environment, including javac and java and have built other java apps. from source in this system).

I have just downloaded the .zipped Win version (not the installer), unzipped and run java -jar VUE.jar (tested under Mandriva)

The 1.5.5 beta version blows up on Fedora Core 5:

VUE init failed

END java.lang.NullPointerException

Does anybody use this stuff? Or am I simply
discovering the meaning of the word "beta"?

Hi Paul:
Supporting VUE on multiple platforms is a challenge for a team as small as ours, but yes, VUE does run on Fedora Core 5. have you read the release notes, located at:

These notes contain specific instructions for running VUE on Linux.

I would also suggest that you download 1.5 Final, which is build 1.5.36. It is available on from Sourceforge at:

If you continue to have trouble, please let me know. I have a machine that is running Fedora Core 5, so I should be able to reproduce any problem you encounter and suggest a solution, or provide an update.

I am using VUE 1.5.36 on Linux and it works fine with java 1.5 or higher (for example sun java environment or IBM java environment). However, the default java environment of Fedora is Gnu Java, a free java 1.4.2 environment, and VUE 1.5 is not compatible with it, as far as I know.

Have you installed the Sun java environment yet? If not, I think you should install the Sun java environment and, then, try to run VUE (java -jar /path/to/VUE.jar).

If you don't know how to install them, follow theese tutorials:

1) For Fedora Core 5: http://ccl.net/cca/software/SOURCES/JAVA/JSDK-1.5/index5.shtml
2) For Fedora Core 6: http://ccl.net/cca/software/SOURCES/JAVA/JSDK-1.5/index6.shtml
