As I understand one of VUE's strength is the freeform node and arc(/edge) layout (and that's the main reason it is attractive to us), but there is still a lot of hierarchical data out there. Also RDFS acknowledges this sad fact with some specifications. Business people tend to think in hierarchies and when you are lucky in a bit cleaner taxonomies.

Having some minor hierarchy support function in VUE would make it easier to create nice visualisation which are easier to communicate with traditional hierarchy-thinking people.

three ideas here:

Align as hierarchy/tree feature
It would be nice if I can grab a few nodes and tell the system to try it to align as a tree. As you see in the screenshot, variations like "align tree to the left", "align tree to the right" would be very nice.

As I might already have many arc's in my VUE file it might be useful to have a command like "align as tree based on named arc", and then it ask me to pick an arc (E.g. one with the label (or even ontology property) "is-part-of") and then it uses only these named arc to try to create the tree.

I'm aware that loop, multiparent and undirected graphs would make this implementation tricky, but maybe going a very pragmatic way would be sufficient and just cover it with a 80-20 rule. Let the system try to align, and when it fails due to multiparent or loop, just fail with an error message, maybe friendly pointing which node cause the problem, and maybe even focus activate the problematic node.

Snap bezier tangent feature
I really like the freeform Bezier tangents, really nicely implemented also from a usability point of view. But sometimes I need to make my nodes a bit stricter. Maybe having a snap to 0, 45, 90, 135, .... degree when I hold down the the shift?/ctrl?/alt? key would be nice. Maybe snapping every 15 degree would also work well.

have orthogonal arcs
Even though they are really ugy, and they are all over Powerpoint and Visio slides they are useful from time to time. But as shown in the screenshot with the existing soft arcs one could make tree like structures too.

Hi Phillip,

Thank you very much for the feedback. We will keep it under consideration.
