Christian,

Assuming you have Sun Java 6 runtime installed in Ubuntu, you can either open Terminal, and run java -jar VUE.jar or you can right click VUE.jar and select Open With "Sun Java 6 Runtime". Some Ubuntu users have reported that they need to sudo in order to fully run VUE, I haven't personally found that but I am on 9.04.

Hey mike,

Can i make you a question? I've ubuntu 9.10 too, and your suggestion works greatly, right click -> open with java6 is ok, when I do that command I can open vue from the .jar file.
But, how can I install the program on my hard disk, it's seem that in those way i use vue as a file that I open in which then i've to open the file i want to use.. Can you understand what I mean? Sorry for my english, I'm not really used to use it.

Thanks in advance

Luca,

That's a good question, I haven't set up file associations for VUE on Ubuntu let me look into what needs to be done and get back to you.

Thanks,

If in Ubuntu you right click a .vue file and select "Properties", then in the Properties window select the "Open With" Tab, Then click the "Add" button and select "Use Custom Command", this will open a textbox, where you can type:

java -jar /path/to/VUE.jar

As the custom command for VUE files and now double clicking on .vue files will open them in VUE.

Hope this helps,

Mike

Just a quick, somewhat noobie question:

VUE for Linux is a Java software. Is it the same for the Windows and OSX versions? Are they also a Java software? I was always under the impression that with Java one would only need a single download which is a universal one...

Cheers!

Yoav,

All 3 platforms are Java, the mac version is packaged to work and look more like a native java app, and set up file assocations for vue and vpk files, etc. THe windows version is packaged with a windows installer to setup a typical directory structure and start menu items, as well as file assocations. For Linux we just provide the Jar. Internally the code makes a number of platform specific tweaks to provide better platform integration depending on where it is running but the code base is the same on all 3 platforms.
