Dear VUE Community,

We are pleased to announce the Preview Release (Beta 3) of VUE 3.0.

This release contains most of the features that will be included in our final VUE 3.0 release, due November 17, 2009, as well as enhancements and bug fixes to address some of the requests from our users.

To showcase some of the major enhancements of VUE 3.0, we've scheduled a WEBINAR, THIS TUESDAY, OCTOBER 6th, at noon (EST).

No pre-registration is necessary (first come first serve), and we have capacity for 1000 participants.
To join the meeting, go to: www.dimdim.com/join
The meeting name is: vue03
If you can't join us for the webinar, we will have an announcement on our website when it will be available for viewing.

VUE 3.0 focuses on an innovative approach to the analysis of research data. While VUE 2.0 addressed the ability to access digital repositories and provide visual tools for presentation support of content maps, VUE 3.0 concentrates on extending the application to support dynamic maps of research data for interactive visual analysis and annotation. Users will be able to import datasets into a map, manipulate the ways in which the content is viewed, and immediately define associations between multiple datasets. Especially when one is dealing with large amounts of data, the ability to visually organize and analyze the data is crucial in efforts to educate and share ideas.

Also included in this release is the integration of VUE with the Zotero and SEASR platforms. A new VUE applet will allow users to manage their content within Zotero and directly access VUE to further analyze and visually present their data. Additionally, VUE components will be packaged to be used in the Software Environment for the Advancement of Scholarly Research (SEASR) framework for the purpose of bringing additional value to research processes in the humanities.

Some of the additional changes you'll notice:
- Menu and keyboard shortcuts reorganization for a better user experience.
- The ability to expand and collapse node content.
- Resizing of images controlled at individual node level. Image rendering performance has also been improved.
- Modified pruning function to address circular maps.
- Summary statistics for each map.
- A new datasource repository for access to resources/OSIDs, residing now on our local server for more stable performance.
- The addition of backward and forward actions to the main toolbar to help users navigate a trail of viewed segments of their maps.
- Snow Leopard support. VUE has been adapted to support changes to Java in Apple's Snow Leopard release.
- The inclusion of language interfaces for English, French, Spanish, Russian, Bulgarian, Hungarian, German, Chinese, Greek, and Portuguese. Many thanks to all of our volunteer translators!

Last but not least, we are redesigning the help section of our website to include a more extensive 'User Guide Wiki'. This is a work in progress, but you can view the wiki at: https://wikis.uit.tufts.edu/confluence/display/VUEUserGuide/ENGLISH+USER+GUIDE
Once the wiki is complete, we will be working with our translators to translate this section as well.

The VUE 3.0 Beta 3 release can be found in the Download section of the VUE website: http://vue.tufts.edu/download

As always, please note that VUE 3.0 is a work in progress. We invite the VUE community to try out the new features and provide us with any feedback to help identify existing issues. We are continuously grateful for your interest in VUE.

Best regards,

The VUE team.

Unfortunately I wasn't able to attend the 3.0 beta webinar. I would have really liked to have seen it.

You mentioned that you'd make an announcement about it being available for viewing. Any news? Looking forward to it.
