Dear VUE Team

I'm Using VUE 3.0 beta-4b2 (btw: I love your naming conventions ; - ) ... Dec 15 2009 build 1306
on Windows Vista 64bit

but I think this behaviour is also present on Linux/Ubuntu and is also present in older version. But I thought I might drop some informations here to better understand if this is a bug or a feature.

Somehow I'm not able to attach images into this forum posts. so uploaded them on an external server:

vue_distorted_arrangement_01.png
base situation: vue_distorted_arrangement_01.png

vue_distorted_arrangement_02.png
if I drop a new image into the map and I drop it to close to existing nodes the layout / spacing is altered

vue_distorted_arrangement_02_overlay.png
I overlayed the screenshot in Photoshop (with multiply composition)

vue_distorted_arrangement_03.png
When I drop the new red image just a little bit further away from the existing blue one, the layout is not touched

vue_distorted_arrangement_04.png
second example

vue_distorted_arrangement_05.png
This behaviour is even more drastic when the new image is dropped into the middle of existing nodes

vue_distorted_arrangement_05_overlay.png
Again I overlayed the screenshot in Photoshop (with multiply composition)

vue_distorted_arrangement_06_context.png
some context: I one of our files we use VUE as some kind of "light table" and dropping in new "slides" destroys the layout. As you can see the arrangement layout of the "slides" is a very important information in this setup

So they are two ways we deal with this:
* after a few hours we rearrange the gaps manually by hand ... tedious!
* we drop the new images-nodes on the very corner of the map and then with a lot of scrolling and zooming bringing them back into the middle ... not intuitive

is there a smarter way to deal with this? Is it a bug or a feature?

kind regards
Philipp

I've also notice this and find it very annoying, so, I second the post.

Thanks Philipp!

Thanks for your feedback! This is a new feature that automatically "makes more room" on your map when you drop a node near other nodes.
From what you guys are saying, it sounds like it's too intrusive. We'll probably either remove it, or make it a preference that's off by default.
tnx,
Scott

FYI, this feature has been removed. Tomorrows dev build will be w/out it.
We may still add it back as a preference, but it would off by default.
tnx again,
Scott

Hi Scott,

I understand the feature, but it would be great to have it in the preferences.

If are creating a data analysis map, this feature shines, but if you are creating a map more focused in the display of the content (the place talks), this feature turns a bit frustrating.

Pedro Sardinha
