Sorry to ask such a stupid question (Although, looking at my posting history, I'm at least sticking to my MO (*Cringe*)).

I upgraded to Fedora (Redhat 4.1.2-27 if it makes a difference) about 72 hours ago and am starting to long slog of getting the Linux versions of all of my OS software, including VUE.

Been a bit off by this sentence.

# Note: This is for advanced users only. You won't have the benefits of shell integration, controlled JRE version, and heap optimization.

Considering that I don't know what half that sentence means AFTER Google research, I'm a little worried that I might not be able to handle VUE in a Linux environment. What is actually involved in implementation? Am I better off sticking with the Windows version on my laptop, or is relatively simple. I have basic MySQL and PhP experience, so I'm not completely inexperienced when it comes to code, but I want to be sure BEFORE I download a file that does things to my PC that I can't rectify.

Cheers

Jan,

Where'd you find that Note?

It is pretty straight-forward to run VUE in linux if you were running it before you shouldn't have to do anything new, where are you stuck? Do you have VUE.jar for the latest version?

Hi Mike.

The note is on the download page, under heading Linux / Generic JAR-only version (no installer included).

I haven't downloaded anything from the page itself yet, so I don't have the .jar file. I have only ever used the windows version before now, which basically installed itself once I had the .exe file in place, if my memory serves.

I'm very new to fedora though and have only ever installed programs from add/remove so far, although am eager to learn. What worried me is the only time I've seen someone instal something on Linux they were using the terminal, which is new ground outside of MySQL usage for me.

Okay. I have the .jar file, and can open it with archive manager.

Stuck on what to do next. Do I need to install something in the .jar, or the .jar itself?

Thanks for your help with this.

Jan,

Hmm, that language sounds a bit draconian, I'll try to remember to clean it up a bit. Here's what I think you should do. First check and make sure you're using the Sun Java 6 JRE/JDK. Some linux distros package either the GNU gcj or OpenJDK but VUE runs much better in Sun's JDK. So, Open the "Terminal" application, and type "java -version"

If it says anything other than Sun Java 6, then go to www.javasoft.com and download the Sun JRE. http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

After you install the Sun JRE from the link above, I'm thinking RH uses Gnome, but I've been using Ubuntu so long I've lost track to be honest, but after you install the Sun JRE you should be able to right-click VUE.jar in your file browser and select - "Open With->Sun Jre...", you can probably set that as the default action so you don't have to keep doing that repeatedly.

Alternative you can just run "java -jar /path/to/VUE.jar" from the terminal command line.

Hope this helps, let me know if you have any problems.
