Is there a setting in Vue to make it automatically arrange nodes in the neatest way, with the shortest links and the fewest cross overs? Things are starting to get a bit messy and it's hard to work out how to sort it out myself

Chris,

There are layouts, nothing that does precisely what you want. You'll find what's available in the Format->Arrange and Format->Arrange Linked menus. Arranged Linked takes into account links in the layouts, the other does not.

I've tried all the ones in the menu and none of them really solve the problem and make it neat and easy to understand.

It seems to me that this would be a good feature to put into future versions of this, as mind maps can get quite messy and busy as you put more and more things on them, in fact the possibility of automatic neatening seems to me like the best reason to use computers for this sort of thing in the first place!

It would also make me happy if when I clicked on a node, all the nodes it was linked to were highlited too.

That we can do, you can even hide or lower the opacity of the unlinked nodes and links and specify how many links you want it to traverse and in what direction.

See: Windows->Exploration Tools

or

Use those little boxes O-O-O-O-O <that look like this on the main toolbar.
